Young Spartan fencers receive gold, bronze

SPARTA — The Young National Fencing Alliance Spartans recently competed at the National Fencing Alliance Youth Fencing Cup in Little Falls. They competed in the Youth and Cadet mix foil and saber categories Young NFA Spartans won one gold and one bronze medal.
At early group, stage fencers competed to five touches. At direct elimination, they competed to 15 touches.
NFA Tournament Final results:
• At Categories Cadet Mix Saber (Under 17 years old): Allen Trudnos (NFA at PAL Sparta) from Pope John Middle School, Sparta, won gold medal. Trudnos won all five matches in pool and direct elimination.
• At Categories Youth 12 Mix Saber: Benjamin Giralt (NFA at PAL Sparta) from Helen Morgan Middle School, Sparta, won bronze medal. This was Giralt's debut at official fencing. Overall, he won three matches and lost two.
Trudnos, who attends Pope John Middle School, is classified in top 10 best saber fencers from the state of New Jersey.
