“Every year we get more and more equipment and more people come out for it”

The theater of the Mohawk Avenue School looked more like a winter sports shop than a performance venue when the Sparta High School Ski Racing Team held their Ski Swap Saturday morning.

The equipment for sale ranged from bulky ice hockey goaltender’s pads to sleek Lycra ski racing suits.

“This is our fundraiser to fund our team,” said ski team coach Kyle Markovich of Jefferson.

A physical education teacher in the Alpine School, he coached for four years before coaching for Sparta. “People can bring their gently used equipment and they can set their own price. People come in to look and to purchase great equipment.”

The event allows sellers to show their products on a consignment basis with 20 percent of each transaction going to support the 27 member ski team. Markovich said the team is strong this year. “We have a lot of juniors. They have been racing for a long time together.”

A member of New Jersey Interscholastic Alpine Racing Association, the team races at Hidden Valley but occasionally participates at races at Mountain Creek and Mount Peter.
