— Police are continuing to investigate an April 18 vehicle collision that left a mother and her eight-year-old son seriously injured.

The incident occurred around 10:42 p.m., on Sparta Avenue near the Andover Township border, according to the Sparta Police Department.

Anna K. Phillips, 26, of Rutherford, was driving a 2012 Ford Focus when she lost control of the vehicle, striking two utility poles. Police have not yet determined why she lost control of the car.

After swerving and striking the poles, the vehicle overturned and slammed into a tree, according to police.

The victims were upside down in their seats and entrapped when emergency personnel arrived, police said. They were both wearing seatbelts.

Sparta officer Daniel Elig and Andover Township officer George Loudis cut the boy loose from the car and got him to paramedics, according to police.

Phillips was also successfully extricated by emergency personnel.

Phillips and her son were flown by helicopter to the Morristown Medical Center.
