When Dana Calandrillo heard about the tragic accident that took the life of Sparta resident Salvatore Sarrecchia late last month she knew that she needed to help.

Summer Solstice 108 Salutations — a fundraising event — is being held at Lake Mohawk, Sparta Beach 1 located on the boardwalk on Saturday, June 21. It will be hosted by Studio Vitality with the help of multiple instructors.

"The summer solstice is part of a larger movement,” Calandrillo said. “I had done it last year with a friend of mine in Pennsylvania that owns a yoga studio. I knew I would do it this year myself in this area and at the time that I was organizing it, I did not have a charity planned but I heard about the tragedy when I was meeting with the coordinator at Lake Mohawk. I heard about the family, heard that the father had died and decided to help not long after that."

The family has a website set up through GiveForward.com to collect donations.

"I thought it would be a wonderful opportunity to bring people together and coordinate the fundraiser and help the family," said Calandrillo.

The Accident
According to the fundraising web site: On May 18, Sal was in a car accident with his wife Nicole, the air bags deployed and the powder filled the car so he was unable to see her, the horn sounded and stuck. Sal called out for his wife, Nicole who had a broken sternum and was unable to answer him. Sal got out of the car telling Nicole he was coming to her. Within seconds Sal's life was taken when another car hit him. Sal was pronounced dead at the scene. The man who began the accident was DWI, three times over the limit. Sal has left behind Nicole who also has Multiple Sclerosis, a broken sternum, a fractured back and four children.

Summer Solstice
Calandrillo knew all along that she was going to conduct the event for a good cause. She just didn't know which one.

"I always intended to do this,” she said. “I wanted to keep it local and then this happened within a week of getting confirmation from Lake Mohawk. I can imagine it is a very difficult time for the family."

For event itself, people can expect an afternoon of yoga.

"People that come should expect 108 salutations, our salutation is surya namskar,” Calandrillo said. “We are also hoping to have live acoustic background music and there will be multiple instructors, eight to 10 including myself."

Guests are asked to bring a mat, water and towel. There is a $10 suggested donation for participation with all proceeds to benefit the Friends of Sal fund.

Register online at studiovitalityNJ.com. Calandrillo can be contacted at studiovitalitynj@gmail.com or 973-300-9642.
