“Light and Air," a solo exhibition of oil paintings by Elaine Kurie will be featured during the month of September at the George Segale Studio at 10 White Deer Plaza in Sparta. The public is invited to the opening reception is at 6-10 p.m. on Friday Sept. 6, 2019.
In this exhibition of paintings of still-life subjects and the sea, award-winning artist Elaine Kurie explores the qualities of transparency and translucency of light filtering through glass and water. Reflections and refractions of light in her still life paintings of sparkling glass objects and shimmering light on the sea present a restful, serene mood.
“I have always been inspired by the ocean’s beauty and tranquility, but after learning that our well being can be enhanced by viewing images of the ocean." she said. "I decided to paint the sea as well as still life and figurative subjects. Research shows that staring at the ocean actually changes our brain waves’ frequency and puts us into a mild meditative state."
Kurie aims to create art that lessens stress and adds a soothing, spacious feeling to homes.
"I’m also in favor of anything that brings into a room a feeling of air and light," she said. "But most of all, I believe we all have gifts we can share with the world and sharing our creative gifts can bring joy not only to us but to others as well.“
Also in the exhibition are colorful cloud scapes that continue the theme of light and air. A sense of calmness and tranquility is further conveyed in the painting “Resting”, a reclining figure in quiet repose. This painting was published in the August/September 2019 issue of International Artist Magazine as a competition finalist along with an article describing her inspiration for the artwork and her working process.
In 2018 she exhibited in a group show at Dacia Gallery in New York City, and her work has been included in Manifest Gallery’s International Painting Annual for the past three consecutive years as well as the Art Renewal Center’s Annual International Competition catalog. She also recently won the Butler Institute of American Art Award.
Kurie is a member of the International Guild of Realism, the Portrait Society of America, and the American Artists Professional League. She is represented by the William Ris Gallery in New York. For further information call George Segale Studios at 973-707-8483 or email info@georgesegale.com.
