Football roundup: 5 teams to play in sectional tournaments

Five Sussex County teams will participate in New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) sectional tournaments.

The tournament seeds were announced Sunday, Oct. 27.

• High Point, seeded fourth in the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 2, Group 2 Tournament, will play fifth-seed Becton at home at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1.

• Sparta, seeded fifth in the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 1, Group 3 Tournament, will play fourth-seed Montville there at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2.

• Lenape Valley, seeded sixth in the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 1, Group 1 Tournament, will play third-seed Mountain Lakes there at 7 p.m. Nov. 1.

• Newton, seeded seventh in the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 2, Group 2 Tournament, will play second-seed Hanover Park there at 7 p.m. Nov. 1.

• Wallkill Valley, seeded eighth in the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 2, Group 1 Tournament, will play first-seed Cedar Grove there at 7 p.m. Nov. 1.

Sussex Tech will play Kinnelon in a post-season consolation game there at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30.

High Point wins

High Point defeated Whippany Park, 49-14, at home Friday, Oct. 25, clinching the SFC American Blue division title with an 8-1 record for the season.

The Rangers’ only loss was to Newton, 36-32, on Sept. 27.

Jerron Martress made four touchdowns, John Elko scored two and AJ Sampson added another for Wallkill Valley. Jacob Woods kicked five extra points and Giovoughni Dureny made two extra points.

Martress rushed for 218 yards in the game.

Sal Palmisano made both touchdowns on passes from Brandon Giangeruso for Whippany Park (3-5). One pass was for 56 yards.

Giangeruso also made two extra points on a pass from Dylan Morgenroth. He completed nine of 21 pass attempts for a total of 134 yards.

Elko completed four of six pass attempts for a total of 72 yards.

Sparta wins

Sparta won its seventh game in a row, beating Jefferson, 56-14, at home Oct. 25.

The Spartans claimed the title in the Patriot Red division. The team’s only loss was the season-opener against Montville on Aug. 29.

Christian Brevig made four touchdowns and Lucas Brown, Luke Doster, Jameson Lewis and Anthony Settembre each added another for Sparta. Brody Tanyeri kicked eight extra points.

Jason Post made a touchdown on a 94-yard run after an interception for Jefferson (2-7) in the first quarter. Christopher Connolly made another on a 80-yard pass from quarterback Dalton Talmadge in the fourth quarter. Jack Reed kicked two extra points.

Sparta quarterback Shane Hoover completed nine of 11 pass attempts for a total of 294 yards.

Brevig caught four passes for a total of 140 yards and rushed for another 60 yards.

Talmadge completed five of nine pass attempts for a total of 113 yards.

Vernon wins

Vernon shut out West Milford, 21-0, at home Oct. 25.

Gavin Bruno, Dean Grundy and Josh Jean each made a touchdown for the Vikings (4-5). Jean also scored two extra points on a pass from Aden Karwoski.

No other statistics were available for the Vikings.

Highlanders quarterback Aydin Deane completed six of 16 pass attempts for a total of 68 yards.

West Milford finished the season 5-4.

Newton loses

Newton finished the regular season with a 21-20 loss to Mountain Lakes at home Oct. 25.

Nick Kurilko made all three touchdowns for the Braves (5-3) as well as a two-point safety by tackling the ball carrier in the end zone.

Carson Fitch made two touchdowns for Mountain Lakes (4-4) and Bill Barrett added another. Romano Deconcillis kicked three extra points.

Kurilko rushed for 169 yards in the game.

Fitch rushed for a total of 128 yards.

Lenape Valley wins

Lenape Valley defeated Wallkill Valley, 41-29, at home Oct. 25.

Kevin Giusti made three touchdowns for the Patriots (4-5) and David Holeman, Tanner Gaboda and Jakob Bell each scored one. Gaboda also kicked three extra points.

Zack Clarken made two touchdowns for the Rangers (5-4) and Travis Snyder and Ethan Alfonso each scored one. Joe Kubrin kicked three extra points and Snyder made two extra points on a pass from Clarken.

Giusti rushed for 255 yards in the game.

Wallkill Valley tied with Boonton for first place in the National Blue division with a 4-1 record.

Kittatinny loses

Kittatinny fell to Dover, 21-7, there Oct. 25.

Mike Strong made the only touchdown for the Cougars (3-5) on a 40-yard pass from Jack Brex in the fourth quarter. Lucas Inglima kicked the extra point.

Anthony Lazaro made two touchdowns for Dover (3-6) and Henry Soto added another.

Brex completed nine of 24 pass attempts for a total of 98 yards.

Sussex Tech loses

Sussex Tech dropped its last regular-season game to Pequannock, 32-7, there Oct. 25.

Brian Gruber put the only points on the board for the Mustangs (3-5) in the third quarter. He rushed for 141 yards in the game.

Angelo Cundiff made three touchdowns and Eddie Shalongo added two more for Pequannock (7-2). Nick Zuccala kicked two extra points.

Cundiff rushed for 208 yards and Shalongo for 109.

Hopatcong loses

Hopatcong finished the season without a win, losing to Parsippany, 34-6, there Oct. 25. It was Parsippany’s only win all season.

Kevin Regan, Omar Amin, Lukas Grippo, Rocco Marucci and Joseph Fucci each made one touchdown for Parsippany. Fucci kicked two extra points.

Regan completed seven of 10 pass attempts for a total of 192 yards.

No information for Hopatcong was available.

Pope John loses

Pope John lost to St. Peter’s Prep, 58-47, there Oct. 25.

Tylik Hill made six touchdowns for the Lions (2-6) and Nick Struble added another. Omar Daniel kicked three extra points, and Wes Johnston made two extra points on a pass from Prince Joshua.

Hill rushed for 389 yards in the game.

Joshua completed eight of nine pass attempts for a total of 90 yards.

St. Peter’s quarterback Tyler Bell completed 26 of 36 pass attempts for a total of 387 yards.

The Lions will play St. Michael of Virginia at home at noon Saturday, Nov. 2.
