— The Tri-County Scholarship Fund will celebrate 35 years of helping financially needy students in Morris, Passaic and Sussex counties at its annual Gala Awards Dinner on November 7, 2016 at the Hanover Marriott in Whippany. This year's anniversary gala will honor Kevin Cummings, president and CEO of New Jersey-based Investors Bank, as well as the two visionary men who founded Tri-County Scholarship in 1981, The Most Reverend Frank J. Rodimer, Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Paterson, and Mr. Edward L. Hennessey, chairman and CEO Emeritus of Allied Signal, which is now the Honeywell Corp. The annual Making A Difference Award will be presented to the Farrell Family of Summit New Jersey. Mary Farrell and her late husband Michael AJ Farrell founded the Maeve Foundation which provides funding for literacy and educational programs, teacher training and school facilities. The Farrell Family are longtime supporters of JerseyCAN, Wake Forest University in North Carolina, Oratory Preparatory School in Summit and Mount Saint Mary's Academy in Watchung.
The mission of Tri-County Scholarship Fund is to provide financial support for deserving students to obtain a quality, values-based education to accredited private elementary and secondary schools. Many of these students live in New Jersey's inner city areas where most of the public schools have just a 50% high school graduation rate. Tri-County Scholarship Fund helps these students to attend the private school alternatives that achieve a 100% graduation rate.
According to Tim Duffy, Tri-County chairman and managing partner of Coughlin Duffy in Morristown; "Tri-County is currently able to fund scholarships for 500 students each year, but we have another 1200 students on the waiting list. I call this 'the cause of all causes' because I can think of nothing more meaningful than helping needy children to get an education and a better life. By helping one child at a time, the ripple effect is enormous - touching the family, the community, and improving the lives of generations to come."
Proceeds from the annual Gala Awards Dinner will help to fund scholarships. Each year Tri-County awards Kindergarten - 12th grade scholarships to 500 students, at over 50 different private, parochial, and other religious schools. Over the past 35 years more than $25 million dollars in scholarship funds have been raised by the organization and a total of more than 30,000 scholarships have been awarded to needy children. Scholarship recipients go on to the top colleges in New Jersey and throughout the country. Tri-County graduates are currently attending college at Notre Dame, Colgate, UCLA, Cornell, Penn State, Rutgers, and Seton Hall University, to name just a few.
Those interested in supporting Tri-County's mission are invited to attend the November 7 anniversary dinner and to support the cause. Ads for the dinner tribute journal are being accepted through October 17.
