William Lewis Wintermute died peacefully on April 11, 2023, at his home in Sparta after a long illness. He was 80. He was surrounded by his loving family.

Bill was born on Nov. 7, 1942, in Madison to the late Gerald and Louise (McFadden) Wintermute.

He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1961 to 1965.

After his military service, he joined the Carpenters Union Local 620 in Madison and had a successful 50-year career as a skilled and expert carpenter.

He was a resident of Sparta for 53 years and especially enjoyed working on his many home renovation and landscaping projects.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Jane Prior Wintermute of Sparta; and their children, Christopher Wintermute (Briget) of Chester, N.Y., Bill Cannon (Lori) of Severna Park, Md., and Jennifer Cannon Cataldo (Patrick) of Glen Allen, Va. Bill enjoyed being a grandfather and the special time he spent with his grandchildren, Lily and Declan Wintermute, Patrick and Madison Cannon, and Patrick, Kaitlin, Ryan and Parker Cataldo.

His family is grateful to Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice and for all the wonderful care they provided him during his final year.

There will be a celebration of Bill’s life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research (www.michaeljfox.org)
