340 bags of clothing recycled
SPARTA. Total tops the previous record collected by For Days, a company that recycles used clothing to keep it from landfills.
More than 340 bags of recycled clothing filled Simple Bare Necessities, a package-free store that sells groceries and home essentials in Sparta, on Friday, July 14.
Store owner Mikaela Turner and Kate Assaraf, owner of sustainable hair care brand Dip, worked with For Days, a company that recycles used clothing to keep it from landfills, on the collection.
For Days has hosted similar events in Nashville, Los Angeles and Venice Beach, Calif. Its previous record total was 114 bags.
Simple Bare Necessities has a recycling program to keep more than 20 different waste streams, such as bottle caps and candy wrappers, out of landfills.
The shop is plastic-free and sells bulk refillable items to help reduce single-use packaging.
It recently expanded to the street level unit on 17 Main St. and has a large secondhand-clothing shop there.
