4th-graders raise $2,000 for cancer research
SPARTA. The students at Reverend George A. Brown Memorial School create a lemonade stand and donate the profits to charity.
Fourth-graders at Reverend George A. Brown Memorial School in Sparta raised more than $2,000 for childhood cancer research with their Alex’s Lemonade Stand Tag Day on Tuesday, Nov. 19.
As part of their cross-curricular instruction, the students read the novel “The Big Money Squeeze” by Rymer Strauss. It tells about children trying to make money to purchase a gaming system.
With their teachers Catherine Wood, Jennifer Dannhardt and Jacqueline Moffit, the students created a lemonade stand but agreed unanimously to donate the profits to charity.
Wood said, “We are entering the holiday season and celebrating the birth of Jesus. What better way to start the season than to raise and donate money to a cause that is not only close to my heart but centered around finding a cure for childhood cancer?
“Our students are learning Catholic values that include selflessness, charity, hard work and generosity. Alex’s Lemonade Stand allowed them to expand on their values.”
Alex’s Lemonade Stand is a nonprofit organization that funds research and supports families dealing with childhood cancer.
The Sparta students raised money through online donations, a “wear yellow” TAG Day and sales of lemonade.
