Boy Scouts to honor local women

The Boy Scouts of America, Patriots’ Path Council will be honoring local women at the Sussex County Tribute to Women Awards Luncheon. Lori Space Day, Jacqueline O’Donnell Dumbroff, Jamie LaCouture, Sabrina McChesney Lucas, Christine Quinn, and Marjorie Langlinais Strohsahl will be recognized at 11 .m. on Friday, May 3, 2019, at The Reserve at Perona Farms in Andover, for serving as exemplary role models for local youth. These recipients were chosen for their outstanding services as evidenced by the interest and leadership they have demonstrated within the community of Sussex County. They are citizens who live the ideals of the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives. The luncheon co-chairs for the event are Tammie Horsfield and Cathy Kut who are past honorees.
This year’s honorees prove to be outstanding role models to our youth in Sussex County. Lori Space Day is a zoologist at the Space Farms Zoo & Museum. She is active in the Sussex County Chamber of Commerce, Sussex County Agriculture Development Board -Farmland Preservation, and the Sussex County Board of Agriculture. She has been a member of the State of New Jersey Skylands Tourism Council, and a director of The Sussex County Farm and Horse Show / The New Jersey State Fair. Ms. Day has been a member of the N.J. State 4-H Advisory Council, and the Sussex County 4-H Advisory Council. She led a Zoology 4-H group based at the zoo. Lori is a member of Session of the Beemerville Presbyterian Church.
Jacqueline O’Donnell Dumbroff is the owner and founder of the O’Donnell Law Firm in Sparta. Ms. O’Donnell is on the Leadership Board for Project Self Sufficiency, the Advisory Board for Lakeland Bank and the founder of the Ralph Rojas Scholarship for veterans through the Sparta VFW. Her awards and recognitions include The Award for Legal Justice from the Legal Aid Society and multiple awards from DASI for her pro bono trial work for the Battered Women’s Shelter.
Jamie LaCouture is the Community Relations Coordinator at Thorlabs where she oversees charitable giving, volunteerism and a variety of internal projects. She coordinates participation in events such as local athletic events, trail clean ups, mentoring local students, and a variety of other fundraisers. Jamie seeks to drive employee engagement by connecting employees with causes they are passionate about and are willing to contribute to. Jamie is dedicated to a number of organizations in the community: SCARC (trustee of the Foundation Board since 2014, serving on the golf committee); Sussex County Community College, (Foundation Board member since 2015, serving on the 100 Women Initiative Steering Committee, Ladies Retreat, and Funding Their Future); Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice (Marketing Committee and Committee for the Celebration of Life 5K Walk); and Family Promise (Committee for the Tea Party).
Sabrina McChesney Lucas is a retired special education teacher from Wallkill Valley Regional High School. She coached the cross-country team for 27 years and founded the first girls cross country team in 1988. In addition, she has coached Track and Field at Wallkill Valley and presently coaches Track and Field at Morris Hills High School. In addition, Sabrina serves her community. Some of the ways she gives back include race director of the Sparta Education Foundation Turkey Trot, emcee of the Girls on the Run meet, and an active volunteer at the SEF Dragon Boats. As co-founder of the Leprechaun Leap, in cooperation with the Irish Cottage, Sabrina has raised funds for St. Baldricks, an organization for childhood cancer research.
Elected in 2012, Christine Quinn is currently serving her second term on the Sparta Township Council, where she served as Deputy Mayor in 2015, 2018 and 2019 and Mayor in 2016. In addition Christine is also serving on the Sparta Planning Board, The Leadership Team of the Sussex County League of Municipalities and Sussex County Community College. With her husband Ron, they have volunteered for the Sparta Youth Football and Cheerleading program for 42 years. Christine held various positions, including Director of Cheerleading and program VP and as Sparta Highschool Staff as Head Coach of the Game/Competition Cheerleading program.
Marjorie Langlinais Strohsahl is extremely active in the community through the Sparta Women’s Club. President of Sparta Woman’s Club, then Past Presidents’ Club, Marjorie earned State Honors. An Ogdensburg Historical Society Charter Member, former Ogdensburg First Aid Squad EMT and Auxiliary Founder, Marjorie co-founded Sparta Historical Society. She coordinated Tea and See, Veterans’ History Project, Van Kirk Replication/Tour, and Galas. Serving at NAMI-Sussex with President/sister, Kathleen, the affiliate won “Outstanding Affiliate Revitalization” and “NJ Governor’s Ambassador Award” and endorsed Crisis Intervention Training for Police/First Responders. Marjorie promoted the “Code 9, Officer Needs Assistance” documentary and Code 9 S.H.A.R.E. for those with PTSD. Initiating VIAL OF LIFE, Marjorie updated its “mental health” language, engaged Sparta officials, enlisted Sparta Woman’s Club for this community improvement project, and informed NJSFWC/GFWC, which acknowledged support.
Through the Sussex County Tribute to Women Awards Luncheon, funds will be raised to support the award-winning child abuse prevention programs offered to the community at large by the Boy Scouts of America. The Patriots’ Path Council ranks high among all the Boy Scout councils in the nation in their fight against child abuse. The luncheon will also include a silent auction and an acknowledgement of all past honorees in attendance.
