Photos by John Church SPARTA — While many adults watched big, blue Giants Sunday, young visitors to the Sparta Library Friday morning watched small, orangy-red Elmo. It was Elmo’s birthday.

“Elmo first appeared on Sesame Street in 1972,” said Lyn Gebhard of Sparta, children’s librarian. “He is eternally three and a half years old.”

Elmo is immensely popular. Gephard and Children’s Librarian Assistants Peggy Lami and Thule Bodo, both of Sparta, scheduled two Elmo parties – 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Accommodating 25 guests, both events were fully booked.

“All kids love Elmo,” said Sparta Library Assistant Director Diane Lapsley of Flanders. “Elmo supports reading and we are glad to have all the little readers take advantage the library.”

Abigail Conover, 2, of Chester is a very frequent library visitor. “She comes to story time and gymnastics,” said Conovers’s grandfather, Roger Lussier of Sparta. “Elmo’s birthday party is our third visit this week.”

After assembling craft paper Elmo puppets, guests were served cupcakes with orange icing.
