Local physicians hold seminar on injuries
SPARTA — John Vitolo, MD and Richard Siegfried, MD held a lunch seminar on Dec. 11 entitled “Orthopedic Injuries and Pain Management” for local workers compensation professionals.
Vitolo, of Skyview Orthopedic in Sparta, discussed injuries and treatments of the ACL and rotator cuff.
Siegfried addressed pain management and examined ways to reduce the use of prescription opioids.
The seminar was designed to educate attorneys and nurse case managers on medical issues associated with personal injury and workers’ compensation cases, according to a news release issued on the seminar.
Attorneys and nurse case managers who handle workers compensation and personal injury need a working knowledge of medical conditions in order to best represent their clients. The seminar allowed these professionals to develop a better understanding of the ACL, rotator cuff and issues surrounding pain management.
“Rotator Cuff and ACL injuries are common in the workplace,” said Vitolo. “This was a good opportunity to discuss advances in treatment options. With the newer methods of repair, we are seeing patients recover in less time and with less pain. The feedback was incredibly positive.”
“Pain is complex and often hard for those not afflicted to understand. The prescription of powerful opioids for long term treatment is not the answer. There are many less invasive techniques available to treat painful conditions. It is important to educate worker’s compensation professionals on what treatment options are available. The field of pain management continues to grow and expand each day,” Siegfried.

He specializes in arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder and knee and was a former team physician for the Boston Red Sox.
