New MRI machine opens at Newton Medical

NEWTON — Newton Medical Center has recently opened a state-of-the-art MRI (magnetic resonance imaging scanner) and is now accepting outpatient appointments in addition to providing diagnostic scanning for hospital inpatients.

The new wide-bore MRI delivers both remarkable image quality and high productivity. Its 1.5T field strength is the industry’s best known and most-used. With patient comfort in mind, Newton Medical Center’s MRI has a 70cm bore diameter, the widest bore opening available, and a 50 cm field of view, the longest image range for taller patients.

MRI diagnostic scanning uses a magnetic field and pulses of radio wave energy to make pictures of organs and structures inside the body. In many cases, MRI gives more detailed information about structures in the body than can be seen with an X-ray, ultrasound, or computed tomography (CT) scan. Doctors may order MRI scans to help diagnose multiple sclerosis, brain tumors, torn ligaments, tendonitis, cancer and strokes, for example.

“The new MRI Suite is part of the 2012-2013 facility investment and improvement plan for Newton Medical Center,” said Joe DiPaolo, Director of Operations at Newton Medical Center. “The new Suite provides a calming patient environment with leading edge technology.”

The MRI Suite at Newton Medical Center is a 1,350 foot, two-story addition that includes a Family Waiting Area, MRI Control Room, MRI Equipment Room, Patient Interview Room, Outpatient Holding Room, Inpatient Holding Room and Medical Prep Room. The MRI Room, itself, includes exterior windows so that patients will see natural light from outside while undergoing the diagnostic scan. Also, patients may listen to their own iPod or MP3 player while in the MRI.

The Newton Medical Center MRI Suite is open 9am-5pm, Monday thru Friday. Patients with a prescription for MRI from their personal physician may schedule an MRI outpatient appointment by calling 973-579-8700.

Newton Medical Center was recently named the #1 hospital in New Jersey among hospitals with 350 beds or fewer, by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., one of the nation’s most respected health care research and information companies.
