Pope John student attends Governor’s School
SPARTA. Lukas Liakhovitch is taking part in the Governor’s School in the Sciences at Drew University.
Pope John XXIII Regional High School student Lukas Liakhovitch is attending the prestigious Governor’s School in the Sciences at Drew University.
In the three-week program, Liakhovitch and others are immersed in intense college level research. They are introduced to a wide range of scientific topics and scientists.
Through a series of courses, labs, projects and lectures, students get hands-on research experience by working with Drew professors. They also learn about possible career paths from faculty and from some of New Jersey’s leading industrial, governmental and academic representatives.
Liakhovitch said he is excited to diversify his knowledge of the sciences. “I really like physics, but in the program, I heard that there will be a lot more opportunities to learn about fields I never experienced, like organic chemistry and other environmental sciences,” he said.
The Governor’s School of New Jersey is a tuition-free summer residential program for high-achieving high school juniors who have an interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) subjects.
The programs are open to students from diverse economic backgrounds who are New Jersey residents and who have completed their junior year in any public or private high school or are home-schooled.
High school students who live in New Jersey are nominated by their schools and applications are submitted in the fall of the junior year for participation the following summer.
