Scouts of Crew 629-I-04, from Newton and Sparta, traveled to Philmont Scout Ranch, a national high adventure base in Cimarron, N.M., for 10 days backpacking in the wilderness.

They trained for the trip for more than a year. Training included hikes on the Appalachian Trail, hanging bear bags, cooking, map reading, wilderness first aid and other skills.

While at Philmont, the scouts chose among activities, such as blacksmithing, 30.06 shooting, spar pole climbing, touring and panning for gold. They also summit several mountain peaks.
