Sparta 5th grader shines in cheerleading
SPARTA — Ava Mazzarella, a 5th grader at Helen Morgan Elementary School, and an all star cheerleader from JuST Cheer All Stars in Fairfield, placed 7th in the country while competing at the prestigious D2 Summit Championship in Tampa, Florida the weekend of May 1. Ava’s senior level 4 co-ed team, Senior Four'ce, was one of a select few New Jersey teams that earned a coveted chance to compete in this inaugural competition. Over 495 teams and over 9,000 athletes from 46 states traveled to Tampa for a fighting chance to win the first ever D2 Summit Champion title. Ava and her teammates had an amazing performance on Saturday, "Hitting Zero" deductions. Out of 22 competitive teams in their level, all between the ages of 10 and 18 years old, Ava's Senior Four'ce team placed in the top 15, advancing them to the Finals on Sunday. After another great performance during Finals and "Hitting Zero" deductions again, Senior Four’ce landed in the top 10, with a fantastic 7th place finish in the nation! Thousands of fans and supporters had the opportunity to watch Ava and her teammates perform during live coverage of the competition through Varsity.tv and were able to keep up-to-date via social media @TheD2Summit on Twitter.
Ava's fellow teammates from Senior Four'ce travel from all sections of Sussex County and Northern New Jersey to be a part of the successful program. Her teammates are as follows: Madison Carnahan, Victoria VanHouten, Teagan Murray, Colleen Walcott, Stephanie Sanbornn, Gianna Mancini, Brooke Morosca, Ayanah Alvarez, Ava Rose, Katie Sullivan, Lindsay Scriffiano, Ryann Cemone, Chris Cevallos, Marc Linden, Michael Lawlor and Rey Alberto.
