— Over the weekend of April 27th-29th, thirty Boy Scouts from Sparta Troop 150 participated in the Scoutmasters Council Camporee at the West Point Military Academy. The Troop joined approximately 7,000 other Scouts from all over the United States to learn about the military and have a fun time with the cadets.
After setting up camp Friday night, Saturday started with 6am physical training with the Army cadets. After a quick break for breakfast, the day was spent rotating through many different activities led by cadets who volunteered their time. Among the favorites for Troop 150 were army crawls, simulated military missions, learning how to tie a harness with ropes and getting to hold actual machine guns. Everyone also enjoyed the Army parachuting team who landed right in the middle of camp.
At the end of the day, the Scouts returned to camp to cook dinner and relax. They were joined by former Troop 150 Eagle Scout Dylan Panicucci, who is a Senior Cadet at West Point. The evening was supposed to include a concert and bonfire, but unfortunately rain storms rolled in. However, everyone still had fun hanging out in their tents.
If you could describe the weekend’s weather in one word it would be mud, as it rained throughout the day and night on Friday to create a swamp like effect on the campground. But the scouts were troopers (literally) and made it through the weekend and had an unforgettable experience. First Class scout Colin Muller said “This was one of my best experiences through scouting that I have ever had.”
