Sparta celebrates Independence Day

SPARTA — The township's 2016 Fourth of July parade got underway around 10 a.m. in beautiful marching weather. The bands, the flags and banners, the the various marching groups and festooned vehicles started at the intersection of East Shore Trail and Twin Elm Terrace, proceeded along East Shore Trail through White Deer Plaza and up Mohawk Avenue, terminating at the public library.
The parade was hosted once again by the Sparta Elks. One Step Closetr Animal Rescue (O.S.C.A.R.) won the parade's Best Community Organization award, with the Sparta Historical Society coming in second. The Lake Mohawk Ski Hawks won the best float.
The parade was followed by a fireworks displaymthat evening, sponsored by the Lake Mohawk Country Club.
