SPARTA — Sparta High School will present Stage Door, a fall drama show that will run for three days.
The play concerns a group of young girls who have come to New York to study acting and find jobs.
The scene is Mrs. Orcutt's boarding house, where the hopes and ambitions of sixteen young women are revealed in scenes of entertaining comedy.
Contrasted with this are the cases of the girl without talent and the elderly actress whose days are over.
The central plot has to do with the courageous Terry Randall, who fights against discouragement to a position in the theater where we are sure she will conquer. One of her fellow aspirants gives up in despair, one gets married, and one goes into pictures, but Randall, with the help of idealistic David Kingsley, sticks to her guns.
Color and contrast are offered by a few young men callers, a movie magnate, and young Keith Burgess, the playwright who "goes Hollywood."
The drama team was looking for a 1940's or 50's classic comedy and had its heart set on directing and producing Aunite Mame. However, since the drama department, like most high school drama departments, is mostly made up of females, they didn't have the resources to cast so many male characters, according to a news release on the play.
Stage Door was discovered while looking for a female heavy, large cast show. A movie was made based upon the very popular stage play, which starred Katherine Hepburn, Lucille Ball, and Ginger Rodgers.
The play is a healthy mix of comedy and drama, capturing the manners and style of the 1930's. The main character, Terry Randall, will be played by Carly Marquez and Aimee Buchanan.
Tickets are $10 and will be sold at the door.
All proceeds go to support the Sparta High School Theatre Department.
