Sparta — After 28 years on the Sparta police force and 15 years as its head, Ernest Reigstad has retired as Sparta police chief. His retirement was effective at the end of February. he made an official farewell at Monday night Township Council meeting.
“He had a very long, good career. He was here for 28 years, he’s been my chief since 2003, and everybody wishes him well in his retirement,” said Sgt. Dennis Proctor, who is the public relations officer for the Spaerta police.
“Chief Ernie was here almost 29 years, 15 of them as Chief of Police, which is a significant accomplishment. Very few individuals get to serve that long,” Township Manager William Close said.
“During his time as chief, the professionalism of the department is something he and the town have to be proud of,” Close said.
Close cited technological developments in the department, the prevalence of officers giving back to the community, and the establishment of the police athletic league as some of Chief Reigstad’s accomplishments during his tenure as chief of police.
Reigstad also oversaw the installation of cameras in police cars followed by bodycams on officers, a drug drop-off box, and a safe spot in the police parking lot where residents could meet under a camera to complete deals made over the Internet.
“Chief Ernie, in my tenure with him, exhibited outstanding professionalism and character. He, along with the police department, exemplify the qualities of service that Sparta appreciates and looks for.”
“As good an officer as Chief Ernie was, I think he was a better man,” Close said.
“On behalf of the Town Council, town employees, and town residents, I want to thank Chief Ernie for his outstanding job as chief of Sparta,” said Sparta Mayor Gil Gibbs. “Under his leadership Sparta has become one of the safest towns in New Jersey and the safest town in Sussex County. This is because of the outstanding police force Sparta has and his leadership at the top.
“Chief Ernie has touched the lives of many families in Sparta that no one knows of and will never talk about. Good luck Chief in your future endeavors and stay in touch, my friend.”
Reigstad, in his retirement, has already taken a new position. He is now director of the Sparta PAL. Lt. Neil Spidaletto has been installed as acting chief until a new chief is named. There has been talk, according to Sgt. Proctor, that Spidaletto is in line to be the new boss, but as yet there has been “no definitive affirmation.”
