Stillwater woman takes gold in Special Olympics meet

MOUNTAIN LAKES — Special Olympics athletes from Morris, Sussex and Warren counties, plus some from surrounding counties as well, made a big splash at the Area 3 Special Olympics Aquatics Meet, held recently at the Lakeland Hills Family YMCA in Mountain Lakes.
Special Olympics athlete Kelsey Branagan of Stillwater won a gold medal in the 50-meter freestyle.
Event coordinator was Frank Shapiro of Millburn. A number of volunteer groups cheered on the athletes and helped serve as timers, including Dover Area 3 Special Olympics Volunteers. The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for all children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
