SPARTA It was a striking start to a new season at Sparta Lanes Bowling Alley as SCARC Bowling members prepared for an afternoon of fun, food, friends and of course, some bowling. SCARC, founded in 1957, offers support and advocacy to persons with developmental disabilities and their families. On Saturday Sept. 26, SCARC Inc, held its first meeting of the season. The date kicked off the weekly bowling activity held at Sparta Lanes. The program has taken off because of the socialization, exercise, and a good time had by all. The bowing alley was teeming with excitement as high fives flew through the air and the camaraderie was palpable. Although the day had a very fun vibe to it, the competition was fierce. Some needed assistance, while others were independent. Pass It Along youth members also participated in the event by assisting bowlers and cheering them on. Just like all bowlers, this group is hoping for strikes, high scores and keeping gutter balls to a minimum. Not only is Saturday bowling a time to hang out with friends, but also a time to play your top game and possibly place for the Special Olympics. “Last year, eight SCARC participants ended up going to the State Special Olympics Bowling, and one placing first with a gold medal. Since last year, the program has grown from 60 to 80 people,” said SCARC’s Senior Coordinator of Recreation David Vandenheuvel. Players, if they choose to sign up, must play a minimum of 15 games to qualify for the Special Olympics, which are held in January/February the following year. Mike Hughes, a SCARC bowler, qualified in the state Special Olympics for this year and won three gold medals. When asked why he participated in SCARC Bowling Jerry Palermo answered, “I have been bowling for about four to five years. I bowl to have fun and be with all of my friends, whom I’ve come to love.”
