Allen Trudnos excels at fencing tournament

More than 700 young fencers competed at Regional Youth Fencing Trust Summer Tournament RYC /RJCC in Jersey City, N.J., on Aug. 15. Allen Trudnos of the National Fencing Alliance (NFA) and a member of the Pope John XXIII Junior Fencing Club competed at Junior Men’s Saber (JMS).

Twenty-nine fencers from New Jersey, New York, New England, and Connecticut competed at Junior saber. This was Allen’s first tour at Junior level (up to age 20). He did well at preliminary pools, winning all five matches.

In the pools, fencers fight to five touches. After pool bouts, Allen ranked second place overall.

Starting direct elimination, fencers play to 15 touches (winners go up).

In Round 32, Allen received bye (he got to skip a round as if he had won). In the table of 16, Allen won 15:8 against Eeshaan Chaudhur of Kaprica United Fencing Academy. In Round 8, Allen won, 15:8, against his opponent, Michael Parkhurst of Drew University.

In the semi-final bout Allen won 15:6 against Noah Zeng of Kaprica United Fencing Academy. In the final match Allen did great, winning 15:10 against Evan Chen of the Durkan Fencing Academy. He earned a gold medal at Junior Men’s Saber and received 100 points for regional points standing for the 2021-22 season.

Starting September, the National Fencing Alliance (NFA) will offer special group fencing lessons every Wednesday from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at the PAL gym at 38 Station Road, Sparta, with an option to rent fencing equipment. Beginners will be accepted on a first come, first served basis, with the minimum starting age seven years old.
