Allen Trudnos of Hamburg, a freshman at Pope John XXIII Catholic High School, competed at Cobra Challenge Regional Cadet Circuit at Meadowlands Arena in Secaucus, N.J., on May 31. This tournament was a qualifier to National Fencing Championships and Junior Olympic Championships, which will be held July 3 to 12 in Philadelphia, Pa.

Allen finished in 25th place and earned an additional 70 points to 2021 Fencing Regional #3 Points Standing, which qualifies him for the championships.

Eighty fencers from seven states — Connecticut, New Jersey, New England, New York, Michigan, North Texas, and Virginia — competed in the Cadet Men’s Saber (under 17 years old).

As early groups fencers competed to five touches after a Direct Elimination (DE), they competed to 15 touches and the winner goes up. At the early pool, Allen won four matches and lost two, finishing in second place in his pool.

Starting Direct Elimination Table of 64, Allen won 15:6 against Jang Junhuk (Excelfa NJ).

At Table of 32, Allen lost 9:15 to Hong Vincent (Integrity NJ), who finished fifth.

Allen is a member of the National Fencing Alliance (NFA) and the Pope John Fencing Club. He is coached by his father, Maestro Trudnos, NFA head coach.

For a week in July and August, the NFA Fencing Club offers youth summer camps for beginners and advanced fencers. Camps will be held in the main gym at PAL Sparta, 38 Station Road, Sparta. The camp is open to the public, with no membership required.
