The Sparta High School bowling team finished its season with an overall record of 6-12.

The team was led by two seniors, Evan Miller and Diego Torres, who were named co-captains by head coach Jerry Carter.

“Both Evan and Diego have been dedicated members of the team for four years and possess leadership qualities,’’ Carter said.

To this point of the season, both captains have been impressive with their accomplishments on the bowling lanes.

Miller finished with an average of 179.42. He rolled a high game of 256 and a high series of 622.

Torres had an average of 162.83, with a high game of 242 and high series of 595.

Senior John Ferrera’s average was 176.98. He had a high game of 256 and a high series of 607.

Carter noted that both team captains “work very hard on their individual skills, but more importantly, they lead both by example and in helping their teammates to improve.”

Both aimed to help their teammates become more well-rounded bowlers.

“Evan and Diego have keen eyes to observe their teammates and make positive recommendations that they can try in order to improve,’’ the coach said. “Additionally, they maintain a positive vibe at all times.’’

The team advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 1, Group 2 tournament, where it lost to Demarest, 2-0.

The Spartans defeated Mahwah, 2-0, in the first round.

Several student athletes contributed for Sparta this year.

“Our varsity class is made up of an outstanding group of individuals who are close friends and always support each other: Nick Vasquez, Josh Lipton, Matt Trela and John Ferrara,’’ Carter said.

“The future of the team is in good hands with senior Darnell Jones, juniors Haley DiFillippo, Ling Mei Chen and freshmen Charlie Sehnert and Bilal Masri.’’
