Boys soccer team wins 2 in a row
SPARTA. The Spartans beat Pope John, 3-2, in double overtime, then smash Newton, 7-0.
After three close setbacks, the Sparta High School boys soccer team broke through with back-to-back victories last week.
First, the Spartans earned a 3-2 decision in double overtime over rival Pope John on Sept. 13 before rolling to a 7-0 win over Newton on Saturday morning, Sept. 16.
Against Pope John on the road, Sparta earned the victory when Matt Torres headed in a pass from Patrick Connors with seven minutes remaining in the second extra session.
Kyle Enderle and Charlie Canzoneiro each had a goal and an assist for Sparta, which received 10 saves from goalie Chris Munoz.
Quint Flannery had a goal and two assists to help lead the assault against Newton. Sparta (2-3) also received single goals from Enderle, David Maasbach, Andy Parreno, Torres, Canzoneiro and Andy Parreno.
Sparta is scheduled to play host to West Morris at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21.

Girls soccer
The Spartans, ranked No. 13 in the state, remained undefeated with two more victories last week.
Juliana Dolinski connected twice, and Abigail Pierson added another goal to pace a 3-2 home win over Mendham on Sept. 13. Riley Molbury anchored the defense with a five-save effort.
Against Lenape Valley on Sept. 16, Sparta held a slim one-goal lead at the half before exploding for four second-half goals and earning a 6-1 victory in Stanhope.
Dolinski (two goals, two assists), Connors (two goals), Pierson (one goal, one assist) and Gina Stankiewicz (one goal) led the offense as Molbury made three saves.
Sparta will play at West Morris at 4 p.m. Sept. 21.
Field hockey
Sparta posted two wins by shutout before suffering a 2-1 loss at Wallkill Valley on Sept. 16.
On Sept. 12, the Spartans rolled to a 6-0 win at Morris Hills in Rockaway, led by two goals apiece from Eliana Intorrella and Madison Campisi.
Two days later, Sparta hosted Morris Knolls and earned a 4-0 decision as Maya Albers and Sophia Candeloro each had a goal and an assist. Orianna Bennett registered the shutout with six saves.
The Spartans (3-1) held a 1-0 lead at the half on a goal from Intorrella before Wallkill Valley (3-1-1) scored twice after the break to win, 2-1.
Sparta is scheduled to play at Pope John at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22.
Girls tennis
Sparta split two matches last week, including a 3-2 victory over Morris Hills on Sept. 12 at home.
The Spartans received wins from Scarlet Matteson (first singles), Julia Miller (second singles), and Sara Schwarz and McKaela Reekie (first doubles).
Sparta then dropped a 4-1 decision to Randolph on Sept. 13 as Matteson provided the lone flight victory at first singles.
Sparta (1-2) is slated to play host to Chatham at 4 p.m. Sept. 21.
Girls volleyball
Sparta, ranked No. 7 in the state, remained undefeated after beating Montville in straight sets, 25-22, 25-10, on the road on Sept. 13.
The Spartans were led by Giselle Faria (13 assists, eight service points, one ace, one dig), Aralyn Saulys (12 kills, eight assists, six service points, four digs, one ace), Haley Maher (11 digs, three assists, three service points, one ace), Payton Simpson (two kills, one block, one service point), Lea Tsamadias (seven kills, six service points), Sylvia Przydzial (six kills, three service points), Kaitlyn Peterson (one block), Tara Keller (four kills) and Emma Kristiansen (one block).
Sparta is slated to have a match at Mendham at 4 p.m. Sept. 22 before traveling to face Demarest at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 23.
