Captains called strong leaders
SPARTA. Patrick Connors, Tobias Gomez and Mitch Veron excel on field and in classroom.
Strong leadership by captains Patrick Connors, Tobias Gomez and Mitch Veron contributed to the success of the Sparta High School boys soccer team this year.
“All three have been playing varsity for three to four years,’’ head coach Tim Connors said. “(They have a) good work ethic and are strong leaders and have good character.
“Patrick leads the team in assists with seven along with two goals,” the coach said in mid-October. “Toby was our leading goal scorer a year ago and has two goals and one assist. Mitch is a defender with two goals.’’
The coach has seen the three improve as soccer players.
“All three have shown growth in their leadership ability. (They know) when to push their teammates and when to pull back and show more support.
“They help by playing hard every practice and game. They are vocal when needed but mostly lead by example.’’
The three also are impressive in the classroom.
“All three captains are high academic and a part of various National Honor Society,” Connors said. “The cumulative GPA for our captains is 3.9.’’
