Field hockey team beats Pope John
SPARTA. High school team’s record improves to 6-1.
Senior Sophia Candeloro connected for both goals and Orianna Bennett earned her fifth shutout with three saves as the Sparta High School field hockey team defeated Pope John, 2-0, on the road on Friday afternoon, Sept. 22.
The victory was the third straight for Sparta, which improved to 6-1 this season.
Against Mount Olive on Sept. 18, Candeloro had a goal and assisted on Kailyn Moughrabie’s goal as the Spartans shut out Mount Olive, 2-0, at home. Bennett, a senior goalie, had five saves.
On Sept. 20, Sparta edged Roxbury at home, 3-1, as Madison Campisi had a goal and an assist and Eliana Intorrella and Maya Albers also registered goals.
Sparta is scheduled to play at Morris Knolls at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28.

Boys soccer
The Spartans ran their winning streak to four with two home wins last week.
Sparta (4-3) edged Morris Knolls, 4-3, on Sept. 19 led by Tobias Gomez, who had two goals, and Mitch Vernon and Matt Torres, who had one goal apiece.
Two days later, the Spartans defeated West Morris, 4-0, as Jason Bischoff, Patrick Connors, Owen Carey and Troy Joseph all scored. Chris Munoz earned the shutout with a four-save effort.
Sparta will play host to Mount Olive at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29.
Girls soccer
Sparta, ranked No. 13 in the state, remained undefeated this season with a 1-0 victory over West Morris on Sept. 21 in Chester.
Juliana Dolinski scored the game’s only goal off a feed from Abigail Pierson in the first half. Senior goalie Riley Molbury earned her third shutout of the season with a seven-save performance.
Dolinski, a senior, now leads the team in scoring with seven goals and two assists.
Sparta (5-0) is slated to play host to Chatham at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2.
Girls volleyball
The Spartans, ranked No. 8 in the state, remained unbeaten with three straight-set victories last week.
In its 25-14, 25-22 decision at home over West Morris on Sept. 20, Sparta was led by Giselle Faria (13 assists, five service points, six digs, one ace), Aralyn Saulys (13 assists, five service points, four kills, three digs), Payton Simpson (nine kills, seven digs, two service points), Lea Tsamadias (seven digs, five kills, four service points, one assist, one ace), Sylvia Przydzial (eight service points, four aces, four kills, one dig), Haley Maher (eight digs, six service points, two aces), Tara Keller (five kills, one block) and Kaitlyn Peterson (one kill, one block).
Sparta (6-0) will play host to Montville at 4 p.m. Sept. 29.
Cross country
Senior Ashley Crane finished fourth overall with a time of 20:39 to lead the Sparta girls at the Back to the Mountain Invitational on Sept. 16 at Garret Mountain in Woodland Park.
On the boys side, senior Remson Jarrell finished seventh overall with a time of 17:30 and junior Julian Laznik-Moraghan was 17th in 17:59.
