Helmer powers Sussex team

Sussex County — At Sussex County's American Legion Baseball League games last week, Phil Helmer collected five hits, leading Sussex to a 6-5 win over Sparta, and a 13-3 rout of Musconetcong. At the Sussex-Sparta game at Sparta, Helmer singled twice in two official plate appearances, driving in a pair of runs. Neil Kornutick came through with three hits, and Brett Magura chipped in with two. Sussex outhit the home team 10-5, as Brian Grau went the distance to earn the victory on the hill. Nick DeChristafano singled and doubled, knocking in two runs for Sparta. In the Susses-Musconetcong game played in Stanhope, Helmer legged out a two-bagger and singled twice, knocking in three runs, giving Sussex the win. Kornutick, Magura and Ryan Van Orden delivered doubles, while Kyle Conklin scattered nine hits. Tom Mikolay singled three times for Musconetcong, and Scott Vladyka doubled and singled.
