Newton takes sectional title in field hockey

NEWTON — Newton High School defeated Mountain Lakes High School (Morris County) in varsity field hockey on Thursday, November 3. The final score was 2-1. The New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) North Jersey, Section 1, Group 1 final took place at Newton High School in Newton, New Jersey.
The win is the third consecutive sectional title the Newton Lady Braves have earned. The team will now move on to play the Madison High School Dodgers (Morris County) in the semifinals.
Natalie Rivas and Victoria Docherty each scored one goal for Newton. Lauren Barbato and Nicole Rizzo each made one assist for Newton.
Newton goalie Abby Berkowitz made four saves.
Macara Desai scored the lone goal for Mountain Lakes.
Mountain Lakes goalie Aline Miller made six saves. Goalie Jessica Menack also made four saves for Mountain Lakes.
Team records: Newton 17-3. Mountain Lakes 12-7-1.
