Sparta VFW won the championship in the Sparta Township Recreation Department’s men’s Mush Ball League, which concluded its season Aug. 15.
Mush Ball is softball played with a larger 16-inch ball.
The championship round of the league’s double-elimination tournament was a matchup between Sharpe Plumbing and Sparta VFW.
Sharpe Plumbing forced a deciding winner-take-all final game by winning the first game of the championship round, 1-0. In the championship game, Sparta VFW prevailed in a hard-fought 14-inning battle, 1-0.
Sparta VFW was leading in 14 innings of shut-down pitching by Bob Ferrara and a stellar team defense. The winning rally was spearheaded by back-to-back singles by John Schoch and Tom Urbano followed by a two-out game-winning walk off a single by Connor Kopnik.
