Disappointing to hear how SCCC students were treated

Having lived in Sussex County for many years, I’ve always been proud of our local institutions.

However, the recent revelations about Sussex County Community College (SCCC) have left me quite literally stunned.

Both my children and extended family have previously attended SCCC, and after hearing about the disturbing allegations and audio from President Connolly, I can’t help but feel deeply concerned.

I never imagined I would hear such stories about a place that is supposed to be fostering young minds and preparing them for the future.

These students came here trusting the system, hoping for a fair opportunity to learn and grow. Instead, they’ve faced some of the worst retaliation and unethical conduct in recent memory.

It’s heartbreaking to think that something like this could happen right here in our community and my heart breaks for all who have been affected.

When I first heard the news about President Connolly, I couldn’t believe it, thinking maybe it was narrative and lies. But as more details come out, it’s clear that the issues run way deeper than I’d hoped.

It’s incredibly disappointing to think that a college meant to support students could treat them so poorly and abandon those is need and that at no stage was anything done by the county administrators.

I have no idea how Ron Tappan has allowed this to happen in this town.

It’s time for the college and its leadership to take responsibility and make meaningful changes. These students deserve better, and we as a community need to ensure that SCCC is held accountable for its actions.

The future of our young people should never be treated as expendable, and I sincerely hope the college and Dr. Homer reflects on this deeply and makes the necessary changes for the safety and well-being of all its students and doesn’t bankrupt the college in the process.
