As a parent of three children in the Sparta School District - currently in first, second and fourth grades, there’s nothing more important to me than their safety and well-being while at school.

Like many parents, I worry about the challenges our kids face, both seen and unseen. From the threat of school shootings to the very real issues of bullying, racism, and growing distrust between members of our community and our dedicated teachers, it’s clear that now, more than ever, we need strong leadership on our Board of Education.

That’s why I’m supporting the Stop Raising Taxes candidates. I’ve had the opportunity to get to know these four individuals, and I’m confident in their ability to create a safe and supportive environment for our students, teachers and staff.

They aren’t just running on a platform of financial responsibility (though they are committed to keeping tax increases within the 2 percent levy, which is a huge relief). They’re also focused on protecting what truly matters most: our people.

As someone involved in school/community safety efforts through Sussex County’s Moms Demand Action group, I know firsthand that safety is not just about protocols; it’s about fostering a culture of trust and respect.

The Stop Raising Taxes candidates share this vision. They will ensure our schools implement effective safety measures while addressing the mental and emotional needs of our students and staff.

We desperately need a school culture where every child feels safe from bullying and discrimination and teachers feel valued and respected by the board.

After researching the SRT candidates and hearing them speak about why they’re running, it’s clear that they bring the experience, empathy and knowledge necessary to improve the climate and culture of our schools.

Their commitment to open communication with teachers and parents alike is exactly what we need to repair trust and build a stronger community for everyone.

As we approach Election Day, I encourage every parent, teacher and community member to do their own research. Our Board of Education plays a critical role in shaping the future of our schools, and we owe it to our children to elect people who will stand up for what’s right, not just what’s easy.

I believe the Stop Raising Taxes candidates (Roque Martinez, Emily Serafino, Rebecca Williams and Michelle Hinkle) are those people.

No matter who you decide on, please make sure your voice is heard by voting on or before Nov. 5.
