Why are we accepting these bald-faced lies?

    To the Editor:

Phrases like “The Party of Law and Order” and “Blue Lives Matter” no longer apply to many congressional Republicans.

The attack on our Capitol Building on Jan. 6, 2021, was described by one House Republican as a “normal tourist visit,” despite the fact he was videotaped helping barricade doors against rioters in the House gallery that fateful day. This is just one example of how Republicans are attempting to rewrite history and hamper even a bipartisan inquiry of the events of that day, as well as events leading up to it.

The day of the assault, Jan. 6, was not random, but specifically chosen by President Donald J. Trump to disrupt and delay the Electoral College vote count and to pressure Congress and Vice President Mike Pence to overturn the election of Joe Biden in favor of himself. Civil disorder, rioting, vandalism, looting and mob violence were the methods employed by right-wing extremists to do his bidding.

The tactic to downplay this violent spectacle is demeaning to the American public, as we watched the debacle unfurl on television, right before our very eyes. There was nothing patriotic about this attack; people died, the Capitol Police were beaten and battered, trying to protect and defend our democracy, and our Capitol building was vandalized and desecrated.

So, why are we accepting these bald-faced lies? This is the stuff Russia does!
